Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (1954- ), of California, eldest son of Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968), a United States Attorney General and then a United States Senator, is nominated to be United States Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by Donald J. Trump, 47th President of the United States (2025-2029). 

As Secretary of HHS, Mr. Kennedy will be the Chief Executive Officer of the largest annual budget of all agencies and departments in the United States government- nearly twice the annual budget of the United States Department of Defense (DOD).   

The Fiscal 2025 budget for HHS is approximately US$1.802 trillion.  During his four-year tenure, Secretary Kennedy would manager US$7.2 trillion on behalf of United States taxpayers.   

  • On 29 January 2025, the twenty-seven-member United States Senate Finance Committee held a three-and-a-half hour hearing to consider the nomination.  Three members are physicians: John Barrasso (R- Wyoming), Bill Cassidy (R- Louisiana), Roger Marshall (R- Kansas). 

  • On 30 January 2025, the twenty-three-member United States Senate Committee on Health, Education Labor and Pensions held a three-hour and fifteen-minute hearing to consider the nomination.  Three members are physicians: Bill Cassidy (R- Louisiana), Roger Marshall (R- Kansas), Rand Paul (R- Kentucky). 

John Barrasso (R- Wyoming) is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon.  “Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., B.S. 1974; Georgetown University School of Medicine, M.D. 1978; residency at Yale Medical School, New Haven, Conn.; orthopedic surgeon, private practice; chief of staff of the Wyoming Medical Center, Casper, Wyo.; served as president of the Wyoming Medical Society; a rodeo physician for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.” 

Bill Cassidy (R- Louisiana) “specialized in the treatment of diseases of the liver at the Earl K. Long Medical Center (LSUMC); helped establish the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic to provide uninsured residents of the greater Baton Rouge area with access to free health care.  The Clinic provides low-income families with free dental, medical, mental health, and vision care through a “virtual” approach that partners needy patients with doctors who provide care free of charge.  He helped to establish the nonprofit Health Centers in Schools, which vaccinates children in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System against hepatitis B and flu.” 

Roger Marshall (R- Kansas) received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas.  “He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.  He has served as chairman of the board of Great Bend Regional Hospital.”  

Rand Paul (R- Kentucky) is a board-certified ophthalmologist.  “After completing his residency in ophthalmology, he moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he has been an “active, licensed physician” since 1993.  He worked for Downing McPeak Vision Centers for five years.  In 1998, he joined a private medical group practice, the Graves Gilbert Clinic, in Bowling Green, for 10 years.  In 2008, Paul formed his own private practice across the street from John Downing, his former employer at Downing McPeak.  After his election to the U.S. Senate, he merged his practice with Downing's medical practice.  He has medical privileges at two Bowling Green hospitals.  Paul specializes in cataract and glaucoma surgeries, LASIK procedures, and corneal transplants.  As a member of the Bowling Green Noon Lions Club, Paul founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic in 2009 to help provide eye surgery and exams for those who cannot afford to pay.  Paul won the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services from the Lions Club International Foundation for his work establishing the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic.  He is certified to practice by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO).”
