President Of Indonesia Could Be Consensus Candidate For Next Secretary-General Of The United Nations. Two-Term Head Of State Leading Fourth-Largest Country By Population; Largest Muslim Population. Experience Managing Eleven Natural Disasters And Fifteen Terrorism-Related Incidents
On 1 January 2027, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the New York, New York-based United Nations (UN) will complete his second and final five-year term.
In accordance with Article 97 of the United Nations Charter, the appointment of the Secretary-General is made by the United Nations General Assembly, upon the recommendation of the members of the United Nations Security Council.
The United Nations Security Council is composed of fifteen members. There are five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, and United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the United Nations General Assembly.
Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945, there are ten (10) individuals, including one in an acting capacity, who have held the position of Secretary-General. They are nationals of United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Burma, Austria, Peru, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, and Portugal.
Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia (2014-2024), will complete his second and final term on 14 February 2024.
The seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Widodo was first elected in 2014 and re-elected to a second and final five-year term in 2019. In 2027, he will be sixty-seven years old.
Indonesia (276 million) ranks fourth in global population after the People’s Republic of China (1.4 billion), Republic of India (1.4 billion), and United States of America (338 million).
Mr. Widodo could be a consensus candidate for Secretary-General of the United Nations. If elected, he would be the first person of the Muslim faith (approximately two billion of the world’s eight billion population) to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations. He is a head of state with experience managing eleven natural disasters and fifteen terrorism-related incidents.
The Republic of Indonesia currently has the presidency of the G20 and hosted the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, on 15 December 2022 and 16 December 2022. The State of Japan will assume the presidency of the G20 in 2023.
G20: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, United Kingdom, United States, and European Union (EU) representing its twenty-seven country members.
In advance of the G20 Summit in Bali, President Widodo traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, and to Moscow, Russian Federation, to meet with Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.
In 2023, the Republic of Indonesia will assume the presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

On 13 November 2022, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo received the Global Citizen Award from the Atlantic Council at the Global Food Security Forum held at Kecak Ballroom, Sofitel Nusa Dua Beach Resort in the resort island Bali. The Head of State said that the award serves as a motivation to improve participation in solving global issues.
“Thank you for giving me the Global Citizen Award and it will give me and the Indonesian Government a bigger motivation to take a big responsibility and become a part of the global solution,” he said, adding that he never thought of receiving any award as he only carries out his duty with full responsibility that is in line with humanist values.
“It has never crossed my mind that I would receive this prestigious award. All I have been doing is working as well as possible with full responsibility for the values of humanity,” he said.
In addition, as a diverse country consisting of 17,000 islands, 1,340 ethnicities, and 652 local languages, Indonesia has taught values of tolerance, peace, unity, and cooperation. For that reason, President Jokowi said that he always makes time to see the people and the difficulty they face.
“The most difficult challenge is always faced by the grassroots, by poor families, by low-income countries. Therefore, I always work hard to fight for the independence of these people and voice the interest of low-income countries in various fora,” he said. The President also stressed that the world cannot be built with rivalry and greed. Instead, it must be built with tolerance, cooperation, mutual respect, and mutualism.
The President added that through the spirit of tolerance and cooperation, Indonesia will carry out its duties as the 2022 G20 Presidency and 2023 ASEAN Chair. “Indonesia’s Presidency at this year’s G20 and Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN next year was handed over to me. It will be based on those spirits,” he said.
For the record, the Global Citizen Award is an annual event held by the Atlantic Council amidst the UN General Assembly in New York. Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi attended the event organized on September 19 on behalf of President Jokowi to receive the award.
The award is given to global figures who are deemed to have given real contribution to the world, among them are the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the 12th South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The 2022 Global Citizen Award was also given to the Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, CEO of Google and Alphabet Sundar Pichai, as well as actor and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation Forest Whittaker.
